Paulene draws inspiration from the urban built environment, especially the overlooked minutiae of city streets. Her intention is to highlight the background noise of society and draw attention to the prosaic detail that surrounds us: elevating the ordinary to the gallery wall.
Her ideas are realised as installations or wall pieces, rendered in a variety of media but predominantly textile based, often incorporating found objects and sound.
A growing awareness of environmental issues has made using only accumulated materials and found objects a priority. Revisiting and repurposing components acquired for previous projects has resulted in viewing familiar materials in a new light and fostered another level of creativity. There is also scope for future collaboration or exchange of surplus supplies with other artists.
