Jill Flower
Textile Artist
Profile
Jill is currently a part time interior designer and has had an avid interest in stitched textiles for nearly 20 years. She achieved City & Guilds Part 1 & 2 and in 2007 completed a Diploma of Higher Education in Stitched Textiles (Distinction) from Buckinghamshire New University.
During the 3 year diploma course she pursued an interest in lace and edgings and developed the idea of combining the formality of Elizabethan ruffs and with Shakespeares’s speech ‘the seven ages of man’ from the play ‘As You Like It’.
Thus, she created three witty & light hearted pieces to form a trinity of ruffs- man, woman & child- it is a modern day interpretation using a unique manipulation of stitch and scraps of printed matter trapped into a lacy-like fabric.
Each ‘age’ is interpreted by recycling the use of magazines and newspapers - as the reading interests develop so the literature changes, for example, comics for the schoolboy, girly magazines for the young man through to weather reports and crosswords for retirement!
Following the similar theme, her new pieces of work are lacy paper ruffs depicting ‘The Circle of Life’ all showcased in perspex boxes. Developing work is a ‘Celebration Series’- smaller boxes with the lacy ruffs specifically celebrating an event such as a Christening, Anniversaries and significant Birthdays.
