Susan Chapman
Stitched Textiles
Profile
Susan started out as a computer software engineer and mathematician She came to patchwork and quilting while living in america with her family as a result of her husband’s career. On return she completed City and Guilds parts 1 & 2 in Patchwork and Quilting with Joan York and the Diploma in Stitched Textiles at Windsor with Jan Beaney, Jean Litttlejohn and Ros Hills.
She now works as a freelance tutor and lecturer as well as teaching the City and Guilds courses in Patchwork and Quilting at Eastleigh College in Hampshire. She exhibits with three different contemporary textile art groups. Her work is mainly concerned with issues relating to women, her recent pieces have considered ageing, and also woman’s struggle to fit being head cook and bottle washer together with being superwoman into each day.
For the last couple of years she has been experimenting with sculptural forms, mainly standing figures but currently is working on some soft pieces again. She plans to investigate the effect of the media on our lives for her next body of work, although at the moment she is working on a series of pieces inspired by the people of Pompeii, having visited Italy as a result of winning the Charles Henry Foyle award for stitched textiles.
