Linda Robinson
Textile Artist

Profile

Linda originally worked as a Systems Analyst in Computers but took the advantage of a career break to return to study textiles. After obtaining City and Guilds Part 1 and 2 at Windsor, she went on to complete Windsor’s newly verified Diploma in stitched textiles, from Buckinghamshire and Chilterns University College in 2004. She was also awarded Licentiate membership of Designer Craftsmen.

Linda is currently teaching embroidery and textile classes for several adult education colleges.

About her personal work she says;

‘I am instinctively drawn towards two areas, texture and words. I find that I often remember places by trees that I have seen, noting their interesting bark or twisted shape. Words and phrases often haunt me and I feel that they have to be explored and used in some way.

These two different sources require different approaches to design. Linda finds that working from the source material by taking drawings and photographs to record the image, then creating 3D collages, helps her translate ideas into fabrics. Linda comments that she will ‘write and rewrite the words to get a feel for them ‘this enables her to incorporate them sympathetically into the work.

Currently Linda is looking at trees and what they might have witnessed during their lifetime. The bark is represented by manipulated knitting and felt. The inside of the tree is woven fabric, the weave represents the cell structure, containing words that the tree might have heard in its lifetime.
