Janet Atherton
Textile Artist

Profile

After a career in advertising Janet went on to study the Dip. H.E. in Stitched Textiles at Windsor, graduating from Buckingham Chilterns University College in 2003.

History, culture and social issues are a source of inspiration and current work is developed from the process of delving back into history, uncovering echoes of the past. Taken partly from research into smocking, it is a tribute and reference to the past embedded in textile history.

Although working intuitively research, drawing and photography all play an integral role in her process. Using hand and machine stitch she feels strongly that hand stitch should not be allowed to become a lost art. The tactile quality of cloth and allowing fabrics to manipulate and take on a life of their own, whilst being worked freely in the hand, also feature as part of her process.

Mark making is important to her work and the stitched mark is seen as symbolic of the marks left behind as we pass through life.
