Profile
Although originally trained in pharmacy, Dawn has a lifelong passion with design and fabrics and this prompted a continuing successful interior and soft furnishing business. This interest in textiles led her to gain City & Guilds part Certificate and Diploma and the newly validated Buckingham & Chilterns University College Dip. H.E.in Stitched Textiles taken at Windsor College . During this time Dawn also gained a teaching certificate which subsequently led to taking over the Advanced Textile Workshop at Windsor .
Dawn currently holds the position of course co-ordinator and tutor for the City & Guilds Certificate and Diploma in Stitched Textiles, at East Berkshire College, Windsor, and teaches City & Guilds Machine Embroidery Certificate. Other teaching posts include the City and Guilds Design unit at Bracknell and Wokingham College, together with textile workshops.
Dawn has many interests but her background in interiors, a passion for fabrics, a love of architecture, in particular open structures and a fascination with Native American history and their craft continue to feature and inspire her current work. These influences together with an inherent desire to create large scale structures are woven together to produce architectural pieces.
Although primarily textile in construction, Dawn also draws upon the use of photography and plastics to convey a sense of depth, with the addition of a light source further hidden imagery are brought into the composition.
Reflections, cast shadows, what is held by the viewer, the uncertainty of our own visual interpretations of these also feature in Dawn's work.
She continually explore balance and rhythms and is fascinated by the illusions created by parallax.
Most of Dawn's work is for use in interior spaces, creating moveable screens which slide and overlap to create new images and rhythms.
Division of space, not solid, but transitional, new vistas created by each individual as they move around each piece continue to be her goals.
