Annette Collinge PhD
Textile Artist, Embroiderer, Paper Maker
Profile
Annette was brought up in Portsmouth and studied Botany at university before training in electron microscopy and completing a PhD in microbiology. Whilst working at Imperial College, she took classes at the Royal School of Needlework and, on leaving work, enrolled for creative embroidery classes, which led to City and Guilds parts I and II and a Diploma in stitched textiles. She has always been interested in textile structures and originally thought that knitting would be her medium. Through City and Guilds, Annette was introduced to paper making and this has become an abiding interest and a feature of much of her work.
Annette uses both hand and machine stitching in her work. She incorporates hand made paper in her stitched textiles as well as creating collages and three dimensional forms which do not include stitch. She likes to work with unconventional materials including bubble wrap, vegetable bags and plastic grids. She works in a broadly abstract way, using sketches and photographs to create a feel for the environment she is portraying and has created installations reflecting her interests.
