Amarjeet Nandhra
Textile Artist
Profile
Born in East Africa, Amarjeet moved to England with her family at the age of four. Much of Amarjeet’s early life was spent training and working in the design and print industries. This culminated in teaching graphic communication for a number of years.
During the late 80’s Amarjeet’s passion for textiles was ignited. A journey of studying creative textiles and embroidery was then pursued, which included C & Guilds Embroidery and the H.E Diploma in Stitched Textiles.
This subsequently resulted in Amarjeet teaching at East Berkshire College Windsor, on the City & Guilds Diploma in Embroidery, the Advanced Embroidery Workshop and the H.E Diploma in Stitched Textiles.
One of Amarjeet’s long term goals is to encourage the development of textiles in the local community. This has provided her with many exciting opportunities including teaching afterschool groups, working with Hounslow Arts Education Network and a community project linked with The London Transport Museum.
Her knowledge and experience of textiles and graphic design, has afforded her with many other great opportunities, including the position of Art Director on two independent feature films and several shorts.
As an artist she is interested in exploring the issues surrounding identity, as expressed through family, culture and society. Amarjeet comments on her life and the world around her, a visual narrative on the social aspects of humanity.
Amarjeet’s current work has explored this through the written word. Her work has a graphic quality to it, with text playing a major role. Her ongoing fascination with text is inspired by the beauty of typography and the impact of the written word.
